Your brain is an incredible organ that has many different structures to make living consciously possible. The brain is able to evolve, be molded, and create new neural connections because of its neuroplasticity, allowing you to create experiences in your life that you want to experience. This doesnt just happen right away by changing your mind one morning, but with disciplinary routine and practices you are able to create a pattern in the brain that creates neural pathways which then creates a network and is relayed to your body. Habitual practice = desired results.
It's important to keep your brain stimulated, keeping your brain cells and neurons alive will allow for optimal body function and feeling overall well in your life. When your brain lacks stimulation, neural connection weaken and slow down which affects your overall wellbeing.
The hippocampus is a part of the brain responsible for memory, of life experiences & brain & body functions. The hippocampus is also the place in the brain where neurogenesis takes place, where the brain develops new neurons. Increased cortisol levels, over thinking & fear (increased activity in the amygdala) can affect the hippocampus and has an adverse affect on memory and neurological development.
Healing Neurologically Through the Lens of Yoga:
It is shown that through breathing exercises, asana practice and yogic philospphy, you can reduce high cortisol, and reduce high activity in the amygdala. Yoga affects Alpha brain waves positive which increases relaxation, yoga can help boost proteins called Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) that are necessary for healthy neurons and neuroplasticity. A decrease in adrenaline allows your body to opporate in a state of Homestasis. Dopamine is increased and cortisol is reduced.
Vinyasa & Hatha style classes are best for BDNF, while Yin and Restorative yoga are really good for lowering cortisol levels and Alpha brain wave activity. Overall, yoga practices support brain health & optimal function. Find a practice that works for you, targeting your needs and you will find great transformation and wellness for yourself!
